Online payment methods: choose options your store can support
Direct answer
Choose online payment methods that suit your customers and can be supported by your merchant account, integration and order process. Confirm country and currency eligibility first, then compare the customer journey, payment timing, refunds and operational effort. A long list of payment logos does not establish that every option is usable in your store.

Which eligibility checks should come first?
Check merchant country, customer market, currency, purchase type and integration support for each method.
Stripe’s support tables distinguish country and currency availability from product and API support. Use that structure as an example when checking any provider. A method can appear in a platform catalogue while being unavailable to your particular account or purchase flow. Request confirmation for the combination you plan to launch.

Create a row for each required method with confirmed, conditional or unavailable status. Record the source and review date. Avoid inferring eligibility from a provider’s global brand, an English-language profile or a local office. Treat subscriptions, saved payment details and marketplace accounts as specific questions when they are relevant to your business.
How do you compare the customer experience?
Compare the complete payment and return journey for the people and devices you serve.
Walk through a representative purchase on mobile and desktop. Note whether the customer stays on the page, opens another app or returns from an external step. Check how the store explains a pending outcome and how a customer resumes after leaving. Test the actual integration path rather than judging only a method’s familiar name.
Use evidence from your own customers when prioritising options. Support questions, available store data and deliberately scoped research can inform the decision. Do not claim that adding one method will produce a fixed conversion uplift. Write down the expected customer benefit as a hypothesis and define how you will review it after launch.
How does confirmation timing affect inventory and dispatch?
Agree a release rule for immediate, delayed and unsuccessful outcomes before enabling a method.
An order can exist while its payment outcome is unresolved. Define what the customer sees, whether stock is reserved and which event permits further processing. The correct policy depends on the goods and operation, so retain your chosen rule alongside the implementation requirements.
Use a late-confirmation case to test the policy. If a reservation has expired, a subsequent payment result still needs to be matched to the original order. Assign the resolution to an owner rather than allowing a silent release with unavailable stock. Keep payment outcome, stock decision and customer communication visible as separate parts of the case.
What should the comparison include beyond transaction fees?
Compare refunds, support effort and the full quoted cost under the same purchase scenario.
Ask what the chosen method supports for full and partial refunds and how confirmation reaches your team. Request the process for an unresolved refund or a customer dispute. Record who can initiate an action and where the current outcome is checked. Do not assume all methods behave like the card flow already familiar to your support team.
Use actual proposals for transaction charges, fixed fees, currency conversion and any additional services. Add the operating work your team must perform, such as reviewing pending cases or reconciling records. State which amounts are quoted and which assumptions still need confirmation. A fee comparison without a shared scenario can conceal important differences.
| Dimension | Question to answer |
|---|---|
| Eligibility | Is this account, customer market and currency combination confirmed? |
| Customer journey | What happens on mobile, return, cancellation and retry? |
| Order release | Which outcome permits processing and what remains pending? |
| Refunds and support | How are partial amounts and unresolved cases handled? |
| Cost and review | Which quoted charges and operating tasks apply to the same scenario? |
How should new methods be introduced and reviewed?
Launch after the required paths pass acceptance, then compare outcomes using a consistent definition.
Before activation, test success, failure, abandonment, delayed results and required refunds in the supported environment. Involve support and order operations in the review. A method that works on the payment screen but leaves unresolved orders without an owner is not ready for unattended operation.
When reviewing usage, distinguish checkout starts, payment attempts, successful payments and completed orders. A change in the customer mix or campaign traffic can affect results independently of the payment method. Keep the review modest and traceable: observed usage, customer issues, operating work and the decision to retain, improve or remove the option.
Your project checklist
- Eligibility is confirmed for the actual account and purchase flow.
- Customer journeys are tested on relevant devices.
- Pending, success and failure have explicit order rules.
- Reservation expiry and late confirmation have owners.
- Refunds, support and quoted costs are included.
- Usage review distinguishes attempts, payments and orders.
